Bronx Flavor FODRATWATS – Second week of Sept. 2010

Bronx Flavor

The first time I saw Justin Fornal’s character Baron Ambrosia, it was about a year ago in the following YouTube video:

After tipping back that rare sip, my first thought was, “What the heck was that??” and then of course, “Where can I see more?”

It turns out, Mr. Fornal had an 8-episode culinary podcast in 2007 called Underbelly, which then was revised and picked up by Bronxnet public access as Bronx Flavor.  Bronx Flavor follows the Baron throughout the borough on culinary adventures.  One doesn’t have to live in the Bronx to appreciate these quests, however.  They are both eye-opening to different types of cuisine from all over the world, and hilarious in his misadventures.  It is worth it to watch every episode.

Then when you are done, well, the Baron recommends some Pepto.

The Matrix is explained to The Dude

I love The Big Lebowski.  It is so quotable and hilarious.  The Matrix, too, is a pop culture staple.

Now, I have seen my share of mash-ups.  Most of them are pretty dang crappy.  This one, however, is done really well and feels like it was just meant to be.

Double Rainbow – No really, what does it mean?

I follow Nathan Fillion on Twitter because he is a pretty funny guy.  And is kind of a dork.  I can relate!  It’s great.  Anyway, one fine day he tweeted, “Watch this.”

Ok …  Hrm.  Right.  Then he tweeted, “Now watch this.”

Alright, I think I’m getting this.  This is pretty silly.  Apparently this was all over the internet, potentially for a really long time before I saw it.  But, that’s ok.  Because then Nathan Fillion decided to make Double Rainbow a part of our vernacular with this tweet:

Ok, I’m recommending that the new “in” phrase be: Double Rainbow. Usage example: That pizza was so Double Rainbow. Oh my god.

He has tried similar cultural infiltrations before with the high-five/fist bump alternative, “feed the birds” which he even integrated into an episode of his television program Castle, but I have to say that while the heart was in it, the world was not ready for it.

The Internet, was, however, ready for this.

Several acronyms have popped up, to really help people who don’t know how to spell, are too lazy to type, or have character count restrictions:

DR = Double Rainbow
ATW = All The Way
AST = Across The Sky
FO = Full On
They can be combined in a number of ways, such as:
“This sandwich is so DR”
“That movie was DRATW!”
“These pipes are clean! FODRATWATS!!”
So this was pretty great and we were all having a fine time with it.  Then, as it started to get stale as so many internet things do, this happened.

Sigh.

Crystal meth is a helluva drug

And then there is this guy:

I can’t tell if he is on drugs or if he thinks this should be a wrestling promo video.  Or maybe he just lives in a van down by the river.

Backin’ Up – First week of September 2010

Backin’ Up

Last week, a woman in Kansas who witnessed a convenience store robbery was interviewed by a Kansas City  TV station, KMBC, and the interview was then posted on their Web site.  Pretty standard stuff, really.

Obviously, this is what the Internet feeds on.  The great creative minds of plugged-in youth got busy working on making it into a song.

Over the weekend, people recorded their own covers.  My favorite right now is the ukulele version, but I do have a soft spot for ukes.  I think really, that it has only been, oh, a week? since the original interview aired is just mind blowing.  The speed of technology is frightening, isn’t it?

Now that you’ve heard it a few times, I defy you to not have it stuck in your head the rest of the day.

RSS feeds. Awesome or boring?

September 7, 2010 1 comment

I love my RSS feed reader.  Personally, I use Bloglines.  I can organize all my feeds into different categories, save posts, and had I a mobile phone, I could send them there as well.

There are feed readers built into Web browsers, search engines, mail readers … all sorts of things, so there are plenty from which to choose.  I prefer a web-based version so I can waste time on the internet wherever I happen to be.

It has gotten to the point where if a site does not have an RSS feed, I probably will forget to check it for updates and may possibly forget about it altogether.

So what is RSS?  How is this useful?

There happens to be a page on the interwebs called, aptly, WhatIsRSS.com. That explains it in a simple, concise way that is a lot better than what I could hobble together.

Ok, that still seems a little boring.

Well, from the dude who brought you Zombies in Plain English, here is RSS in Plain English:

In summary, get yourself set up with an RSS feed reader, and then subscribe the heck out of MMDubDub.

UPDATE: Bloglines is being shut down as of Oct. 1. Booo!  Now I must find myself a new RSS feed reader.  Jerk-ass Ask.com.
